Where, Oh Where Did That Left Kidney Go?
I’ve mentioned before my love of mom blogs, and according to this article, I’m not alone. My very favorite blogger, Alexa, lives here, and though I’ve never met her or so much as commented on her blog, I idolize her. When my friend Dina and I discovered by chance last summer that we’re both regular readers, it was like finding out we share the same best friend.
Since I’ll never be as brilliant or write as eloquently as Alexa, I decided I could at least rip off her style, so for Christmas, I made Chris order this for me:

In addition to our jewelry, I discovered last night that Alexa and I share one other thing in common – we each have a one-kidneyed kid. Wee P was born without a left kidney and with a megaureter (an over-sized, dilated ureter) connecting her right kidney to her bladder. The news freaked us out for several weeks – so much so that we considered canceling the move to China. Her urologist, however, assured us that she’s perfectly healthy, prescribed a bunch of antibiotics to bring in case she develops a UTI, and gave us his blessing to bring her wee, missing-organed self to the other side of the planet.
Even though I no longer actively obsess about Wee P’s health, thoughts of her solitary kidney are never completely out of my mind. I’d therefore like to thank Alexa for this post and for giving me a reason to laugh for a change when I think of Wee P’s lonely kidney.
Speaking of the missing-kidneyed one, can you believe the child is already seven months old? Time flies, huh?
